The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a stateled effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards were designed to be rigorous and relevant, define the knowledge and skills that students should acquire in their K-12 academic career, and prepare them with the necessary tools to graduate from high school and succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing academic college courses and/or workforce training programs. The state of Illinois adopted the Common Core State Standards in June, 2010.

To better align instruction to the CCSS, it is essential that they are clear to educators, parents, and students with focused guideposts. The CCSS are not a curriculum. They are a clear set of shared goals and expectations for the knowledge and skills that will help our students advance academically and compete globally. These standards are essential, but they are inadequate without the information and resources necessary for educators to adjust their classroom practice, engage students to reach the standards, and communicate these standards effectively to parents and the educational community.

This professional development seminar provides an in-depth look at the criteria and development of the standards, what the Common Core Standards mean to educators and students, and practical instructional strategies for success in diverse classrooms in the state of Illinois. Participants will explore:

• Accurate information about the criteria and development of Illinois CCSS

• Case studies, small group break-out sessions, and instructional strategies to engage participants in relevant collaboration

• Effective strategies to communicate CCSS to parents to foster essential parental involvement

• Grade-level specific instructional materials that align with the CCSS
