Chicago Southside Tour - Pullman Neighborhood, Industry, and History

Handicap Accessible Group will be picked up in a clean bus and will meet a City of Chicago certified tour guide atthe Pullman Historic District.Particiants tours the areaand enjoy adiscussion of the structured arrangement of Pullman housing, a look at the Greenstone Church and a visit to the Arcade. The Hotel Florence may still be closed to visitors, but the exterior can be viewed. Participants leavePullman and travel to either the DuSable Museum (admission $1 for children through age 13 and $2 for anyone over 13 - admission not included in price), or Oakwoods Cemetery. DuSable Museum offers a good overview of the experience of African Americans in Chicago. Exhibits speak to the mayoral term of Harold Washington and also give insights into the election of President Barack Obama. Oakwoods Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Chicago. It contains the burial sites of Harold Washington and famed Olympic champion Jesse Owens, as well as other prominent African Americans. The cemetery also contains The Confederate Mound, the largest burial site of Confederate soldiers outside of the South, as well as some Union veteran burial sites. Oakwoods provides insight on African Americans in Chicago and a chance to discuss the Civil War. Participants will have the opportunityto drive past the University of Chicago and to visit the site of the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. There can be a visit to The Wooded Island which was built for the 1893 Fair and which contains the Osaka Garden, a gift to Chicago from Osaka, Japan. The exterior of the Museum of Science and Industry can be viewed on the approach to the garden, and a short trip can be made to The Statue of the Republic, a replica of a statue that stood at the 1893 Fair. Participants have their choice for their picnic lunch atThe Midway Plaisance in Washington Park, or Jackson Park. Picnic lunch is provided by tour participants - Teaching Safari can provide lunch for an additional fee. |
